common knowledge? [Mar. 3rd, 2005|01:11 pm]
what percentage of people do you think know that if, for example, march 3 falls on a thursday this year, it will be on a friday next year? (except when a leap year intervenes, then it would be saturday.) also, do you think most people care what day of the week things happened on?

this game is very fun. i think it's so fun because you can't cheat and go to the answers. you have to just keep going and see how close you can get...

aren't academics sweet about telling you you're wrong? [Feb. 9th, 2005|05:05 pm]
"I believe, however, that a careful examination of their evidence and reasoning will show that their results fail to support such a conclusion and, in fact, that their results are actually harmonious with the opposite conclusion." - p. 194 in Stanley Lieberson's "A Matter of Taste: How Names, Fashions, and Cultures Change"

the best quote i've heard in ages [Sep. 8th, 2004|08:04 pm]
this was in today's boston herald. they're instituting a dress code at norwood high school, and one young man isn't too happy at the prospect of school without the bare midriffs and flashes of thong he's apparently become used to.

"Without that, it's just books and old women."

why isn't anyone on tv making the point that we should be hoping for the total destruction of florida by this storm? if it was the democrats who were the religious extremist party, we'd hear it was god's wrath for katherine harris!

has anyone stopped wearing a watch due to the ready availability of the current time on cell phones? and what about landlines - we still need them, right?

a post with the most [Aug. 9th, 2004|10:05 pm]
saw garden state tonight with [person icon] cga. i tried to chase the train in my car and couldn't find parking near various trolley stations, so ended up driving all the way down to boston common, which should have been a disaster and a lesson learned but instead i scored an amazing parking space (had i gotten a ticket in the space, i wouldn't be calling it amazing) and met cga right in time to invoke the coupons i've finally gotten out of my wallet. ate some nibs, nuggets, and kernels during the show. i give it a b. natalie portman was great, though. it's amazing how far she's come considering she used to be the young queen of another planet and now she's an actress here. the movie had a cool tone and soundtrack. there was even some dialogue about the shins. but the general message of the movie, which kicked in strong towards the end, was stop taking your psychiatric drugs immediately, because there's nothing wrong with you, and don't go back to your home and job but kiss a girl from your hometown who you never knew before. i'm losing steam talking about garden state. the new alexander payne movie coming out looks pretty promising, but has a silly title ("sideways").
